The Land
Explore the unique features hidden throughout the forest and grounds in one of Canada’s most diverse ecosystems.
Guests have access to a network of over a dozen trails networked across the 204-acre property. The land features mixed forests and meadows, granite outcroppings, ponds, and marshes. It is home to a wide range of plant life and wildlife.
Waterfront
Wintergreen sits on the edge of Paddy’s Lake, a semi-private lake but a 20 minute hike from the lodge. This glacier carved lake is perfect for a dip to cool off on a hot summer’s day or a skate when the lake is frozen in the middle of the winter months.
All guests are welcome to use Paddy's Lake for recreational purposes. There is a canoe and rowboat available.
Fishing is allowed on Paddy's Lake but guests must possess a valid fishing license and follow the Ontario Fishing Regulations (including open and closed seasons, possession limits, and size restrictions).
Outdoor Classroom
Built in 2022, with support from the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area and the Township of South Frontenac, this open structure was designed as an outdoor gathering space for events and private retreats.
It is used as a workshop space for the Land Art BioBlitz, a stage for music concerts, a platform for intimate sharing circles and healing work, a studio space for arts workshops, and a communal dining area for weddings.
Sauna
Built in 2009, the cordwood sauna is mere seconds from the lodge. Wood-fired and cedar lined, it heats quickly and provides a cozy experience for two or three adults at a time.
Wildlife
Wintergreen’s land is rich with wildlife. From the elusive five-lined skink (Ontario’s only lizard) to grey rat snakes to squirrels and wild turkeys, coyotes and deer, and even the occasional black bear, many creatures call this land their home. We are most aware of the wildlife in the winter, when we see the many tracks and traces they leave in the snow.
Labyrinth
Built in the summer and fall of 2017 (moving rocks takes a long time!), the stone labyrinth is just minutes from the lodge. It features a 11-circuit design, known as the Minoan pattern, dating from the 11th century.
The labyrinth is a central feature in Wintergreen’s seasonal programming—we host a labyrinth walk around each Solstice and Equinox—and guests are also invited to wander the labyrinth at will.
