Printmaking 101

  • Wintergreen Studios 90 Wintergreen Lane South Frontenac, ON Canada (map)
Art is something that makes you breathe with a different kind of happiness.
— Anni Albers (American textile artist & printmaker)

January is the perfect time to have a joyful day of art making, fine food, and in the company of others ready to experiment and play.

Come and spend the day making a variety of prints using gel plates and a variety of paper types. No experience required. And if you’re an experienced printmaker, you’ll be inspired, too, by a new setting with new materials to explore.

You will learn a few techniques, take a look at some samples, and then jump in! Experience the joy of playing with paint and paper and ephemera to create a series of one-of-a-kind prints. You can make small prints (3” x 5”), greeting card size prints, or prints as large as 8” x 10”. Or all of the above! We’ll have the materials. Learn from the facilitator, learn from each other.

We’ll spend a couple of hours in the morning trying different styles and materials. Some of your prints will be surprisingly delightful—beautiful, even—some… er… not so much! But it will be fun, regardless.

After a break for a delicious Wintergreen lunch, we’ll gather again and see how the “er… not so much” prints can be re-purposed by saving a segment of the print or using it as the basis for a greeting card or a mixed media creation .

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

RENA UPITIS loves playing with materials—sometimes big (like steel and timber), sometimes small (like needle and thread and a dried up leaf). Many of her whimsical mixed media works draw on musical motifs and themes, and she takes inspiration from the people that join her in the studio. She came to enjoy printmaking late in her artistic play, having spent many years prior painting in acrylics and creating mixed media work with paper and fabric ephemera. She is not formally trained, but has learned a great deal through workshops with some amazing artists, among them printmaker Angela Costello, mixed media artist Holly Dean, and artist and writer Nick Bantock.
