Nature Journaling: Exploring Nature Through Words and Pictures

  • Wintergreen Studios 90 Wintergreen Lane (formerly 9780 Canoe Lake Road) South Frontenac, ON Canada (map)

Have you ever gone on a walk and wanted to know the name of a particular flower or wondered who that bird was, why it was flitting back and forth, and chatting at you? Satisfy your curiosity through nature journaling!

Many people make notes or lists, take photos of what they see, or describe their experiences in journals using stories or poems. Others draw or paint birds, plants, and animals. Most of what they do is stored on different devices, platforms, art books, or journals. Now you can learn how to put all your nature experiences into one notebook.

Join us for a weekend of hiking through the woods at Wintergreen Studios, discovering its secrets in trees, rocks, flowers, birds, bugs, and fungi. With journals in hand, we will stop to make notes of what we see, describe new-to-you species, and make lists. Upon returning to the Lodge, we will learn how to expand our field notes, create maps, drawings, use symbols, identify species, and write about the experience.

Hike. Observe. Record.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Friday

Once everyone arrives and has a chance to settle in, we will head out on a late afternoon hike to begin exploring the Wintergreen landscape. We will then bring our conversations and findings back to the Lodge where the instructor, Hilbert Buist, will introduce us to the art of nature journaling after a gourmet dinner.

Saturday

After a hearty breakfast and distribution of materials and resources, we will take another hike on the land.

Saturday will consist of multiple hiking sessions, with a break for lunch and dinner, of course, and detailed discussions around why do nature journaling, what types of journaling can be used, and how we can deepen our knowledge of species identification. The day will also include opportunities for pause, reflection, and personal exploration.

Sunday

Sunday will consist of a hands-on morning session on using maps and symbols and the fundamentals of drawing. We will then take to the land for our last extended hike followed by a chance to share what we have discovered and created through the weekend. The workshop closes after lunch.
