Gifts of the Land: Herbal Medicines

  • Wintergreen Studios 90 Wintergreen Lane South Frontenac, ON Canada (map)
A man [sic] may esteem himself happy when that which is his food is also his medicine
— Henry David Thoreau

Plants connect us to the earth and their use as herbal medicines link cultures from around the world in a beautiful tradition of curiosity, land-based knowledge, and reciprocity. Come for an experiential introduction to this tradition as we spend the day exploring the meadows and forests at Wintergreen Studios, learning about the remarkable plants, some common and some less so, that make this place their home, and explore their particular uses for healing and health.

This is in an introductory workshop and no previous experience is required. Under the guidance of a registered herbalist, you will learn alongside others in an inclusive, collaborative, and conversational environment. You can expect to come away from this workshop having experienced a diversity of landscapes and plant communities, learned about the fundamentals of responsible harvesting, and feeling equipped with a new understanding of the different ways to preserve plants' various medicinal properties.

We invite you to come and learn from the land and make new connections both with each other and the plants all around you.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

TAMARA SEGAL is a registered herbalist and teacher. She runs a clinical practice at her farm in Prince Edward County, ON, working one-on-one with people for natural health support. With gratitude, she harvests and makes medicines from the plants that grow there, providing them in her private practice. She stewards the land at the farm, observing and learning from it as it undergoes a process of “re-wilding.” She is also a forager and wild foods enthusiast, collaborating with her husband, chef Chris Byrne. Tamara guides plant identification walks throughout her local region, offers re-wilding consults for other land stewards, and teaches courses on various aspects of herbal medicine. Tamara's offerings come together under her company name, Hawthorn Herbals.
